While a messy environment may put us in a bad mood, messy art shouldn’t! It’s okay to be messy sometimes when you know your children are learning and having fun. However, we do understand that embracing messy art is not an easy process. With all the mess your toddlers can make in and out of your home and the possible yelling and reprimanding, it can be extremely difficult.

Messy art takes courage. Do you have the courage to see your child learn and have fun and promote your relationship with each other? If so, research more about messy art, prepare and plan it correctly, and be flexible so you and your kids can have fun together!

The first five years of your child’s life are the years where they are like sponges, taking and absorbing all information they can get from the people around them and the environment. Encouraging them to do messy play can promote their learning process. Aside from being fun, messy art can stimulate your child’s senses, developing your child’s cognitive development and creativity.

Here are some benefits of messy art:

  • Enhances fine motor skills
  • Develops their language and vocabulary
  • Encourages creativity and imagination
  • Promotes emotional development, confidence, and self-esteem
  • Improves their socialization, concentration, and problem-solving skills
  • Teaches the concepts of mathematics (measurement, counting, calculating, etc.)

If you’re planning to try messy art at home, secure a washable, child-safe paint or hypoallergenic foam shaving cream. Whether you want to use a paper, box, fence, or canvas, you can do it indoors (bathtub or anywhere with easily washable floors) or outdoors! Be sure to lay down a washable table cloth or tarp big enough to contain the mess as much as possible. If your child gets too messy, have a hose and towel ready.

Let your child have fun, and surely, when you see the joy in their eyes and excitement as they do their artwork, you will feel the same way too! Just remember, they may be messy, but they are learning and having fun. Plus, you can wash them when they’re done!
